I would really appreciate any help. For the past several months, I started to hear noise as if water leaking or running in a toilet. But nothing is coming out. This is happening 24/7, so even if you don't use it, you can hear it, and its kind bothersome now.
The toilet that I have is an old one: just some pipes attached to the toilet w a little metal hande sticking out from the pipe.
I have been living in the apartment for over 4 yrs.. About 2 years ago, I had to ask the super to fix the handle, because you would press it and no flushing. He fixed it and it was OK, although now, I still have to wiggle it or hold it down until it fully flushes. Also, when I turn COLD water on in a sink after 10 seconds scorching hot water comes out instead (no problem in a bathtub, nor in a kitchen. And this has been since I moved in). Please help.
Thank you, Valerie

Toilet: It appears you need new flopper and new fill valve. It is relatively minor repair and should be responsibility of your landlord.
Sink: Is hot water coming from both Hot and Cold valves ? This could be a matter of switched water supply connectors under the sink. If so, it is also relatively easy to correct and it should be responsibility of your landlord as well.
Back to you. Milo

Take your hand and run it around the flat part of the fla
Pper. If the it's wavy replace the flapper. Also for a good flush the linkage between the flapper and the flush lever arm should have 1/4" of play. Too much a the flapper gets suctioned back down interrupting the flush. Too little and the linkage will be to tight and the flapper will fall back down as soon as the flush lever's released.
What type of lavatory faucet do you have? One handle or two knobs? What brand is it? Let me know, Tom

@ Milo: the sink has one nob that I turn either to the right for cold, or to the left for hot water. No matter where I turn, only hot water starts running.
@Tom: It has one handle: if I pull it down-doesnt flush, if I pull it on a side (towards me) and hold it, then it flushes. The name it has is "Gerber"
Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Sounds like your flapper linkage needs adjusting.
With the flapper seated the linkage wants to have 1/4" of play. Too much play and the flapper doesn't get pulled back enough giving you a short flush. Too tight and it lets water seep past the flapper. I adjust the chain by the link and if it needs fine tuning, I bend the flush lever rod a bit until I have the desired play in the linkage. One more thing about a flapper. you will see where the old flapper hooks onto the base of the white overflow tube. On a older type with no hooks the flapper has a ring that slips down over the overflow tube to the seat,(see image). If your tank has hooks, take a sharp knife or scissors and cut the neoprene ring off on the marks provided and hook the flapper on the hooks. Leaving the ring on will interfere with the flush. The water level in your tank should be 3/8 to 1/2" below the top of the overflow tube when the tank's filled. And the little tube wants to run from the ballcock and connect to the white overflow tube..
I still need to know the brand name of your lavatory faucet. Cheers, Tom

It appears the cartridge inside your faucet is bad allowing only hot water to go through. I suggest you have it replaced with new cartridge to get both Hot and Cold water. Milo
