Menstral cycle has gotten much heavier and emotionally out of control at age 40. Is this normal or not. Literally my emotions for two days are so out of control; last night I felt like I was hyperventilating. It's horrible. And for the first time I am bleeding about 1/2 cup sized clots, not all of them but a few.

You could be pre-menopausal at age 40; every woman is different at this time of life. Hormones bounce all over the place and menstrual cycles deviate from a lot to less. I would suggest you see our doctor, and he probably will recommend HRT horomone replacement therapy which I hope you will consider not having; investigate Google, I won't presume to give you a website here for this when you can look around at your leisure. Just enter HRT in Google to find all of this information.
Most women consider the change of life liberating as I did, no more worry about intimate relationships and becoming pregnant, giving you carte blanche to explore your sexuality at your leisure.

I'm also 40, and I know how you feel. I used to be as regular as the moon, but now I can go months without a period only to suddenly get the worst period ever (changing a tampon every hour for 7 days).
I'd suggest seeing your doctor. If this is the onset of menopause (keep in mind that this stage can last 10 years), then your doctor will have some suggestions on what to do.
