View Full Version : New Oatey Shower Drain Leaks Around Caulking Gasket

I just installed a new shower and drain and the drain is leaking around the black caulking gasket of my new Oatey Caspers drain. It seems I am unable to create a good seal when tightening down the locking nut on top of the gasket. At first I thought my PVC pipe was sticking up too tall into the drain, so I cut it so that the gasket sits down on top of the flange at the bottom of the drain and the top of the gasket is even with the top of the PVC pipe. This seems to be in line with the minuscule instructions that came with the drain.

I have do access to underneath the drain, but I really can't understand why this seemingly easy part of the installation won't work. I suppose I could get the whole thing out again if needed though.

Thanks in advance for any help provided.

Hi Moir Adam

Pull the gasket and try again... a little plumber's grease on the inside of the gasket may help to slide it to the bottom of the strainer assembly.

If that fails it may be necessary to get a new gasket.

Thanks for the info. I tried again, and again with a new gasket. Can't seem to get a completely water-tight seal. Just did it one for time, this time with silicon slathered on both the inside and outside of the gasket and then again where the gasket meets the locking nut. If this doesn't work I'll just call a plumber.

Thanks for taking a minute to post an update... I appreciate it.

It sounds like you have done all that you can (including more than you should have... ;))... hope it works out "cheaply" for you!

I am curious as to what you put under the lip of the strainer up on the top side of the shower strainer assembly. Did you use plumber's putty or silicone to start? Let me know if you have a chance, OK?

Thanks...
