I just started with this part time job trying to help my boss organize his book. He used to get outside accounting firm to do it and since this year he has not done anything. When I went through his bills and bank statements, there are so many items that I could not reconcile and there are no backup for support. I was not very happy with my boss and ask him why he used his business account to pay for his personal expenses etc. And he told me he has been in business for over 35 years and never got audit before. Is there any way I could get IRS involve withour hurting myself. I just want him to learn the right way to keep his book and not get me in trouble later on.

If you don't like the way he runs his business, then don't work for him. I don't see where it is your business to report him to the IRS for audit.

Irene:

Tickle has a point, but Tickle's point of view is limited, because he/she may NOT recognize that you also may be held liable by the IRS for the status of your employer's books.

If your employer refuses to follow Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, then you probably have no choice but to resign. Calling in the IRS to audit your employer is a DRASTIC action to be taken only as a last resort, and one I would do ONLY IF I was sure there was significant tax fraud involved.

Tickle, who is a she (you can tell by my avatar, or my profile, sheesh) does have a limited view, but can't the OP have a waiver signed by the employer that she can't be held responsible. In fact, what if company is having a private individual do the books, outside of the office, can they be help responsible in case of an audit?

So report it to the IRS, you will never get a job reference, the next place that may do a few things border line may be afraid to hire you. And so on

You want him to learn the right way then teach him. Make him a present of Accounting for Dummies. Unless you are a CPA or help him prepare his tax return, I doubt if you will get in trouble. If you feel you are at risk because of improper records then quit. If you report him you may put him out of business, which leaves you out of a job anyway.

Scott DOES have a valid point about putting out of business if the IRS gets involved.

I just want him to learn the right way to keep his book and not get me in trouble later on. Hello I:

Any brand new employee, who thinks the proper thing to do is to SNITCH on her brand new boss, in order to TEACH him something, isn't capable of teaching ANYBODY ANYTHING.

You need to learn more about life yourself...
