I believe you are talking about an AAV, air admittance valve.  Air Admittance Valves (http://www.toolbase.org/Technology-Inventory/Plumbing/air-admittance-valves)  Sometimes folks also call them Studor vents since Studor was one of the main manufacturers for a time.

That's right Bob !  He's asking about a AAV, ( air admittance  vent, see image).  Some areas allow in line vents,  some do not.  Check with your local Building Department,  Good luck,  bTom
