Tough to know for sure without being there to look it over but you'll want to make sure there isn't a short in the starter or the wires to the starter. I don't want to make you spend the money but I have seen this before and it "usually" winds up to be a bad starter.

I spent 15 years as an auto tech...I'm glad I could help you out.

Maybe your expertise can help me:
I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee that will not start.  Sometimes, I turn the key and it starts just fine, other times it will not fully start.  I turn the key and the engine will groan but not start, I try lightly stepping on the gas at the same time and nothing will happen.  I do hear the fuel pump turn on, it has had a new distributor, and ecu installed.  The starter does not click, sounds fine.  I took it to the jeep dealership and the ran a diagnostic, no codes were in the computer and of course it started every time for them.  Any other suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

. Remove and fully charge the battery. Afterwards, check for any bad cells. If you need a new battery, charge it prior to installation.

. Install new spark plugs (Champion only), if they have not been replaced in 3 years.

. Install a new coil.

. Install a new Crankshaft Position Sensor.

. Check the ignition switch for wear, pitting, or melting.
