I get blood clots to they are sometimes very big or simi-big.I have been told they they are normal it's just the blood coming out.
The blood clots are not abnormal.
Often they can be a sign that you loose a little more blood than the average woman.
As long as you are not suffering from anemia or are that should not in itself be a reason to worry.
When enough blood comes together outside of your veins, it clots, which is perfectly normal.

The blood clots are normal... especially when you are bleeding heavily.

Before I gave birth to my son (he's 2) my period's were normal and came like clockwork. Since then, my period's slowly started getting heavier and heavier. Now I bleed really big clot's. They are golf ball size and a few were somewhat bigger. I was on a 28 day cycle but it has moved to a 24 and sometimes a 20 day cycle. I have had enough and have made up my mind to have a D&C this weekend. I am dreading this, so I am looking for another solution. Does anyone out there have any?? If not I am climbing on the table of dread!!

I noticed as I got older that my periods were shorter in length (went from 7 days to 5 days) but that the clots became much bigger. Usually the second day is the day from hell and I'm afraid to be away from a bathroom for more than an hour or two. My doctor said that this is completely normal. Also, the same thing has happened to all of my friends. I had a D&C and it made no difference.

I had massive clots - some were as big as a man's hand, and I was going through 5 towels an hour. I came off the pill and the problem was resolved within a few months. Doctor said she wasn't surprised, had heard this before.

Is it normal to have large blood clots during the heaviest

Only you can really answer that question. If large blood clots happen with all your period and it's something that did not just start, then it could be normal. If its something that had never happen before and and just suddenly happen then there could be reason for concern. If it is abnormal for you then I would suggest getting seen by a doctor, for heavy bleeding with blood clots could possible be signs of health problems. Good luck and keep us posted. :)

What's a D&C
LisaB4657
Nov 17, 2005, 03:40 PM
A D&C is a dilation and curettage. The uterus is dilated (expanded) and a sharp instrument is inserted inside and the lining of the uterus is scraped. It's often done after a miscarriage to remove any tissue that may not have passed.

Hi i am the same some months i get them some times i dont . i get quite scared as sometimes they are really big an if i getting up in morning after my periods start they are that big i can feel it coming out but i never went to get it checked .You should also see the doctor, as this is not normal, this means that your clotting factor is too high for some reason and it might indicated other medical problems, so please don't just write it off. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY... and care. I think now is the time to ask what family illnesses there are and write these down too, because you will always be asked questions from doctors, and it's a good idea to have answers, especially in an emergency room. It's your life, think about it.

Yup, that's normal. If you don't want to have cramps or stomach pains, try drinking 1/3 of a bottle/can of beer. Pilsen. Don't drink more, it might get to be very heavy

I have the same problem. I've been worried about it for some time now, but it's nothing new for me. I get very large clots, feel them passing - just as many of you have stated. The other issue I have is that I bleed for anywhere from 2-4 weeks at a time, not always heavy, but it's been this way for as long as I can remember... I would like to go see a doctor about it but I don't have health insurance.

I had a shortened cycle throughout the whole of 2005. I would have a bleed every 2 week or so. It wasn't until Nov 05 that my GP referred me to an obgyn. I had a pipelle test & a pelvic ultrasound. The ultrasound revealed my problem as I had an endometrial polyp & fibroids. Just prior to surgery, I also passed some huge blood clots that were freaky. I think the safest thing for you to do is to get a pelvic ultrasound to rule out any polyps or fibroids.

I know life is not always what we would like it to be, but if you have a goal in life, you also need a healthy body with which to achieve it. Instead of a few luxuries in the home for a few months, curtail those purchases and invest your money in your body and at least get a OB/GYN Checkup. It's the only body you have and it will keep you in good shape if you take good care of it. Unfortunately there is no way of diagnosing any ailment through online forums or chatrooms yet, just in telemedicine and you need to be a patient for that.
I'm enclosing a document on menstruation that you can double click and read and see if it applies to you. Again, please consider seeing a doctor, though. Good luck, and please keep us posted.

hi millie, i am going through same thing, been to docs told me its the start of change, its hell though, every 15 days.Depending on your age, and if you have a good doctor, you should be receiveing hormones to help you. Every 15 days, in my opinion, is not normal. I would seek a second opinion.
Try the following online site and see if you can get some reassurance and answers. Good luck, and keep us posted.

Thanks Chery, the information you sent was helpful, I am 46yrs, and I will go to the doctors once I return to Ireland. I personally think it could be fibroids!

At that age, it could be fibroids, myomata, and/or menopause. I got mine when I was 42, but still did not have the clots. Good luck with the doctor and keep us posted. P.S. Don't forget to get your regular papsmear too. Your body is the only one you have and you need to take care of it.

You should see your doctor if it will ease your mind, but I know I had and still have that same problem... I can feel them and at times it is as if I am dropping a kid out or something (sorry so blunt), but my doctor said that it is NOT abnormal to do this.. Seems I have had this happening more since I've gotten older... so do what will make you feel at ease :)

Yes this is normal. But if your concerned its always advisable to have your physican perform a ultrasound test to make sure everything is OK. But honestly, clotting usually occurs during the heaviest time of ones period so its nothing to worry about.

I bleed clots that's it clots in the shower when Im using the rest room. There huge they started like golf ball sized and now its more like 4-5 gold ball size at 1 time. My husband poor man I had to show him because I don't think he realized how much pain I was in. But he saw me go through 3 tampons and change of clothing within 1 hr. So he was like do I need to take you to the er. I was like no this happens every month. I don't think this is normal. Im getting on insurance next week. I haven't been to a doctor in 4 years because of no insurance. But I feel your pain your life is built around your period at least for the first 3 days. Oh man. I'm 16.. I started when I was 10 and since then I have had really bad and painful blood clots. The second and third day are the worst. I had anemia when I was 10 but I don't know about know. Could I have cervical cancer?

I'm 17 and yesterday when I got my period (I've had it since I was 11) I had such bad stomach cramps that I passed out from the pain. They put me on the pill and today I've had quite a few big-ish blood clots. I think it may be from the pill but that seems a bit strange since I have only taken one so far. But it also may be just a really bad period. I got blood tested for anaemia today.

If your gynecologist says it is normal to have blood clots I would see another dr. it is fairly common, but not normal! There are things that can be done to help with this because it can be hard to function in your daily life with this. If it really is a problem for you go see a dr.

I have that same problem. Tonight I had blood oozing down my leg. I had to run inside and the blood clots were horrible. Normally I have heavy periods anyway but I'm also anemic and have low hemoglobin. I guess now I can tell the doctor why. My periods are just awful. So I understand how you feel. It sucks. But definitely tell your doctor if you're concerned. It's better safe than sorry I always say.

Blood Clots are normal for the first few days of the cycle. If you look it up blood clots is only the unfertilized egg coming out in large pieces. So don't be nervous unless you have a history of problems regarding your period or you have a painful period

Hi
I use to have the same problem as you... blood clotts... I had a blood test and the doctor told me I was eneimic (had low iron). I took some medicine and now I feel so much better... my last periods weren't as painful as it use to be and the blood clotts are so minor...
You should go to the doctors too just to get checked out...

I really am no expert but I have had large clots as well with pain and went to emergency were they did a cat scan and found I have a ovarian cyst on my right ovary and only a ultra sound or a cat scan can detect this. Ovarian cyst can be very dangerous or minor. You may want to talk to a doctor and ask about cyst possibilities.

Having read this and the other posts in this thread, I thought I'd share my experience with you. When I was in high school I had heavy periods for over four months non stop with huge clots - some of them bigger than my hand. I have had periods since I was 10. In January 2006 I woke up one morning with severe abdominal pain, I was vomiting and I also had diarrhoea. I went to the ED and they did all the scans - x-ray, cat scan, you name it. It took the doctors a while to figure out what it was until they figured it out that I had a 12cm ovarian cyst. They removed the cyst, as well as my right ovary and the filopian tube. For the last 12 months I haven't had my period, until three days ago. This afternoon I've been passing clots - but only small ones at this stage.

During your period, your body will release anticoagulants that keep the blood fluid and thinned. However, if your flow is extremely strong, the blood may pass before the anticoagulants can work. In this case, the blood may clot as it is passed.
However, there are times when blood clots should be a reason for concern. If you are passing clots that are bigger than a quarter on a regular basis, it could be a sign of something else.
In this case you should consult with your doctor immediately to find out the cause. The following conditions could be causing you to pass larger than normal clots.

I have had my period since I was 11 years old, At the age of 13 my mother decided I needed to be put on birth control just to be safe. I had normal periods came every month and of course I hated it. After receiving my first DEPO shot I didn't like it and wanted to switch to the pill. After doing this I kept forgetting to take the pill and just quit doing birth control all together and used condoms. When I was 15 or 16 got seriouse with a guy I liked and wanted to have his baby (don't ask why lol) we tried and tried and tried but nothing happened so not using any contriception I kept trying and no baby. There is nothing wrong with me according to my doctor I am a little over weight but there are tuns of over weight people who get pregnant. I have noticed then after I stopped taking the birth control my periods got all out of wack wouldn't show up for 3 or 4 months or it wouldn't stop for 3 or 4 months and this is how I have been living with it since that time. Now almost 21 and married (not to same guy) I can't for the life of me get pregnant we have been having unprotected sex for 4 years now and nothing has happened. I had been diagnosed with HPV but as far as my doctor is concerned I have been cured of this and again nothing is wrong with me... What is wrong with me anyone know?

Thanks LisaB4657 for describing your experience because it is exactly the same for me. It is awful. When this first started I went to the doctor and she said that I can take Aleve a few days before my period and the first few days of my period and it will stop or reduce the clots. It worked. I haven't been doing it lately because I don't like to take medicine but it has gotten so bad lately that I think I will take it again next month. Thanks everyone- it's good to know I'm not the only one with this problem. It's so scary when it's happening and you feel so alone in it.

If you are having these symptoms, don't look any further online for help. Just get to a Gyn and let him check you out. It could be serious or nothing, but let them tell you.
I started my period on 9/6/10. It was heavy, nothing too unusual for the first few days, then after the 7th day, I was still on it, I had also been passing a little larger than normal blood clots, I started worrying. When I had been on it 2 weeks, I was at work, lifted something kind of heavy, passed a really large clot, and bled through my clothes. That night I went to the ER for soaking through 2 pads in about 3 hours. My blood work was fine, no loss of blood and no anemia.
They told me to follow up with a Gyn ASAP. So the next day, I called and got an appointment to see a Gyn the following day. Pap was good, but the bleeding wasn't stopped, so he scheduled a sonohysterography for a week later, whether I was bleeding or not. (I was.)
During the sonohysterography they noticed I had a 4 cm wide polyp. They have to remove it and biopsy it. I discuss this with my doctor this coming Friday, 10/15/10, but meanwhile the bleeding and clotting is continuing. I think he's going to suggest a D & C to remove it.
If it's a polyp.. read this.. Uterine Polyps: React, But Don't Overreact (http://www.mayoclinic.org/medical-edge-newspaper-2007/apr-08.html)
Hope I helped some of you get the answer you needed.
