Before copper prices rose a lot, it was common to have copper pans custom made, which were hand sloped with concrete and then tiled. You could still get one made. Now bases are made in place with durorock (conrete board) and a vinyl membrane, and either durorock or hardee backerboard walls.

Be sure to hire someone experienced in this, because those who aren't can make a moldy rotten mess of it in about 2 months and you won't know it's happening under the tile. Very expensive to fix.

No they aren't Joy.. Pans are still built from a copperpan or a vinyl membrane but we still pour THICK FLOOR MUD in them for the floor. Concrete board is only for the walls in these cases... ;)

Kerdi-schluter has a kit that will allow anyone with basic skills to build their own custom shower. Check them out at this link:

I meant the mud as a given, but I've seen durorock under the mud and the vinyl. No?

Most of the showers in my area are hand-made. Carpenter frames it, Hot mopper water proof's it and tile man tiles it - and you are fiinished.
