Hi,

Whilst we were together I took out a policy to ensure my ex's new car as I was going to use it a lot, with her as a named driver. We've now split up and I don't know what to do, I don't want to have cancel it so she looses lots of money, but I don't want to have either my own policy or this one invalidated because of not living together. Does anyone know what I need to do?

You have two choices - insured her car or don't insure her car. You don't have to cancel the insurance right at this moment. Tell her you are cancelling in X number of days and she should make her own arrangements.

How were you able to insure a car in which you have no interest (a car you do not own)?

It is very foolish to be liable for someone else's potential/possible accident.

I ensured it as I was the main driver of it, however this isn't the case now we're not together. I didn't use my no claims on the policy so unless it could potentially invalidate my own insurance by having a vehicle insured at a different address I was only going to tell them that she is now the main driver.

Where do you live?

Main driver or not main driver in MY area you cannot insure a car you do not own. For example, I can't insure your car because I have no financial interest.

I don't know what you mean by you "didn't use [my] no claims on the policy."

If YOU carry the insurance and she is in an accident YOU are going to be sued and if the claim exceeds your limits YOU are going to have to pay.

Agree, this what I did or did not do before makes no difference, if it is paid up for a certain amount of time, tell them they have to then to get their own insurance. Merely cancel it after they have been told to get their own
