** in general a lot of this will be state specific and very specific to the contract you have with them in your rental agreement or lease.

They can and most likely will bill you for the entire cost of replacing the carpet in the son's room. Since they would not have replaced it had it not been burnt.

Now at least locally, if and when it goes to court if you don't pay and they sue you, they would get the cost of the carpet minus depreciation of the carpet but add additional court costs.

Talk to carpet installer about using piece from the closet to PATCH the burned area.
