Black and white film. At the end of the movie, a woman (I thought the role was played by Bette Davis but can't seem to find this among her movies), who appears to be impoverished, is standing a little way outside of a very nice house looking in through a big window. Inside, there is some kind of party where people are wealthy and joyful and the woman's daughter is being celebrated in some manner, perhaps the daughter's wedding? Inside, everyone just loves the daughter, and all is joyous. It seems the mother has sort of surrendered her lovely daughter so the daughter could have a better life and the mother, with her poverty and lack of social standing, stays out of the daughter's life pretty much, although she has raised her and loves her. She is happy for the daughter, but the scene is bittersweet.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I don't think I'd ever seen the entire movie and have been wanting to, but didn't know the name! I didn't think ANYONE would know what I was talking about! So happy!

I actually LOVE this movie so much that I have it on my DVR - great acting, tear jerker, has held up so well with time.

Interesting side note - Barbara Stanwyck starred in the movie and had a difficult time getting the part because it was out of character for her. Bette Davis wanted the part and didn't get it.

I think Davis was a little too "edgy" for the role, myself.
