View Full Version : I have to jump start my lawn mower. What is wrong with it?

I have a 6yr old Cub Cadet lawn tractor with a 24hp B&S 2cyl. 12 volt. In order to start the mower, I have to jump start it with the car. I have replaced 3 batteries, the started (last year), the voltage regulator, both battery wires (positive to starter and negative to solenoid), the ignition switch and I've disconnected the headlights because I noticed their wires rubbed against the frame and stripped the insulation off. All this, and the thing still won't turn the flywheel any more than 1 rotation before it runs out of juice on its own and I have to resort to jumping it with the car. It's not the solenoid... I've jumped it and noticed the starter engaging and it tried to turn over (at the same level of effort as if I had used the ignition key).

So I've listed of a lot of big stuff that it's "not"... now I'm looking for help on what it "IS". People have mentioned "relays" and "safety switches", but I'm not sure how to test them and/or find them. Any specifics in this area would be very appreciated.

Thanks.

Suggest you eliminate the possibility of there being a drain on the battery by disconnecting the battery between usage. If battery remains charged you can then start looking for a short that is discharging battery.
