What, if any, is the controversy surrounding the movie "Life of Brian." I really love this movie and don't find it particularly blasphemous but nevertheless can understand and appreciate that some religious folks might find it a little inappropriate. Has there ever been a pseudo/voluntary ban within the US when the movie came out. I was in Europe when I saw it and have tried to rent it out at Blockbuster but they never have it - I was just wondering if there was indeed some sort of conspiracy to squash the popularity of that movie. Alternatively (boring and unappealing as it is), it might never have been a great hit in the US which might explain why Blockbuster doesn't carry it.

If anyone knows the back-story, please pray tell.

It's a religious farce, satirical, and according to some Christian church bodies mocks the birth and ministry of Jesus Christ.

I remember when it first came out, my conservative Lutheran church banned it, so that meant I immediately wanted to see it, which I did. I am a Lutheran preacher's kid and former Lutheran grade school teacher/Sunday School teacher, so I know my Bible well, and had taken Latin in high school, so I knew my Roman history well. I thought the movie was hysterically funny. Nothing was sacred; it made fun of everything and everybody during that time.

A few years ago, I bought the DVD and watched it. It didn't seem as hilarious, but I already knew all the jokes and funny scenes, and am older now.
