Hi
Could you please answer my question, If I had 2 identical sledge hammers i.e. same materials i.e. hickory shaft of the same length & carbon steel head hitting the same surface with the same force or velocity, which would transmit the most shock/vibration back through the shaft to the hand/arm?

Thanks in anticipation
Paul

Asking same question twice, only in a different format will not get you an answer to a HOMEWORK question quicker. We are all volunteers here and really don't appreciate posters wanting questions answered that are obviously in a curriculum.

Sorry Tick Didn't mean to post twice just not familiar with the site and slow connection probably the problem. I'm not a student but I do have to have a pretty quick answer if at all possible.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Paul, thanks for being understanding and polite. It is certain refreshing to see that you admitted you needed a quick answer. Don't think there are any around here right now who could do that.

I'm confused. If they're both identical, then they'd transmit the same amount of shock. Am I missing something? Is there supposed to be some key difference between the two hammers?

It would depend on the force of the person using either one, if both hammers are identical in every respect.

Sorry I missed out the vital part of the question which I have now amended it.

Could you please answer my question, If I had 2 identical sledge hammers i.e. same materials i.e. hickory shaft of the same length & carbon steel head but one weighing 7lb's and the other weighing 14lb's hitting the same surface with the same force or velocity, which would transmit the most shock/vibration back through the shaft to the hand/arm?

Yes, we know, you started a new post.

In that case, if the two hammers are swung at the same velocity and all else being equal, the 14lb hammer would release twice as much energy upon hitting the surface. Therefore, it would stand to reason that it would transmit more shock back through the shaft.

On the other hand, if you swung both hammers with the same amount of energy (which I think is what determines their ability to break a rock or pound in a spike), that would mean that you'd swing the 14lb hammer at only ~71% the speed of the 7lb hammer. In that case, my guess is that the shock/vibration would be the same for both.
