I started a project aout a month ago to remodel our bathroom. After we found how handy the people before us were we ripped everything down to the studs and replaced EVERYTHING. Well Except the toilet... We have pulled the toilet up and put it down several times while doing this project and never had an issue. But the last time I put the toilet on a started to have a problem. I am getting a sewer smell from the base of the toilet. Since I have pulled it up 3 or more times and cleaned off the old wax ring and put a new one on. No luck. This last time I even tied a rubber "Wax free" ring and thought we had it but no, it's back again. It seems to be the strongest after we take a shower and get hot water in the drain. There is currently no sink in the bathroom and the shower drain smells just fine. When we pulled the last wax ring out it looked like maybe the toilet was sitting to low because we could see the ring where the wax was worn away, but with the new rubber ring that would have fixed that. Getting Married in a couple months and need to get this bathroom finished. Please Help!

You say there is currently no sink in the bathroom. Is there a drain for a future sink? If so, is it positively pluged off so no sewer gas can enter from it? Are there any floor drains in the area, if so, dump a couple cups of water done them, just in case the traps have dried up. One way to see if the smell is defintaly coming from a bad toilet flange seal is to use molding clay around the entire base of the toilet as a temporary measure. If sealing the base with the clay stops the smell, then you know you have a toilet to flange seal problem. (the molding clay I just learned about from ballengerb1, great trouble-shooting technique in my opinion.)
