I live in Montreal and I'm 23 years old.
I just got caught by my boss today for cash theft. The loss preventon agency came in our store with the proofs about what I've done. Basically, during the past two months, I took 13 times money from my cash till that added up to 100$ plus some chocolat balls (worth for 70$ in total). They called the police and obviously I got fired. My boss asked me to write a letter of apology, and I did what he asked me to do. I confessed what I 've done and I promesed that I'll pay them back. They hand-in the binder (descriptions about how I took out the money from my till every time and a video as well). I thought the police were going to arrested me but they didn't. They just let me go saying that they will contact me soon. From what I heard, the didn't know yet either fraud or theft that they are going to charge at me. This is my 1st offense, I have no criminal background before.

What kind of punishment might happen to me? Is there a big chance that I'm getting in jail??

There is almost no chance you will be jailed. If you are charged, you can probably get a diversion where you perform community service at the end of which you won't have a criminal record.

If you are charged, get an attorney.

Well, I'm still waiting for the police... they haven't contacted me yet... I'm starting to be worried now since I don't know what's waiting for me... -.-

Indeed, I'm applying for a new job now, and don't know if I should put my last job in the reference section.

You are going to have to account for for the period you worked there.

Most likely the police will not do any thing. What you can expect is a letter from the company asking for about 400 or 500 dollars in "costs" or "penalties"

Still, 3 weeks passed, I haven't heard anything yet... no police contact, no statement from my company, nothing. Btw, I forgot to mentione, even I have taken $ from my till, my till was balanced everyday!!
