I have a Bakers Pride oven that has 4 wires and a 220v 3-wire receptable in which I need to hook it up. The receptable has black, white, & bare wires. The oven has black, red, white, and green. Do I simply hook up the black to black, the red(oven) to white(receptacle), and then the white and green(oven) to the bare wire (recptacle)? Please advise.

You need to open up the distribution panel and check to be sure but, if you only have a black and a white, it sounds like you have a straight 240 VAC wire and a 120/240 VAC oven. What was here before? What is the breaker size and wire gauge?

There was a regular residential range here before. The breaker is a 40 amp I think... The wires are 10G if I'm guessing...

If it is a #10, the breaker is incorrect as it should be a 30. #8 would be 40Amps. What was the VAC rating of the old range? They may have used the ground as a neutral but with a 4 wire range, I'd go with a new wire.

Take a volt-ohm meter and check the receptacle where I would think that black and white are hot and the bare wire is ground. If that is the case the black and red go to hot and the white and green go to the bare wire. Always check with a meter because you never know what someone has done, but I think you are thinking correctly, just never assume anything. DrTom4444
