What should I do if my local GP says I don't have depression

You can always make an appointment with another Physician to get a second opinion.

Are you looking for treatment or a diagnosis... or both?

Hi annemariew, your GP can only make a diagnosis by the symptoms that you tell him you are suffering from.Having heard what you had to say he clearly thinks that your symptoms are not those of someone suffering from depression.

You have given very little information, therefore I cannot give my opinion on what your illness may be.It's clear that you are unhappy by your doctors observation, therefore I would make an oppointment to see another GP, write how you feel on paper... every sypmtom that you are suffering from, sometimes this makes things easier, very often we can go to the doctors feeling a little nervous and consequently don't say what needs to be said,so having details on paper before hand really can help, you just give the sheet of paper to him/her to read... many people do this, including myself.

If you are told the same by a second doctor, then be sure to ask questions i.e... what am I suffering from if its not depression, why do I feel this way? etc... do not leave the surgery until you are completely satisfied with his diagnosis.
