My system appears to be locking up when working on a excel or word document. It looks like it is saving but the bar at top states (not responding). After several to many minutes it either closes or I have to cold boot the system. What are the potential problems and solutions?

Is this a recent thing or has this been going on since using excel ?

It happens with other MS office applications
