A historically very reliable 20" Patton metal floor box fan which I have cleaned and re-oiled many times over the years is now only operating in high and medium speeds, and cuts off after 30 seconds. I presume there is a fault with either the speed switch or the little external thermal box. How can I resume normal operation, can I buy these individual parts, and can I acquire wiring diagrams if necessary? The motor appears to be fine. Thank you.

To be more specific, this fan is a tilt-up high velocity round-shrouded metal floor fan. Even after re-oiling and cleaning the fan, I have observed today that when attempting to dry a newly mopped floor, that it runs for 30 seconds, cuts off for 90 seconds and restarts automatically. I do not know the acceptable temperature range for a fan motor but I will admit that it smells and feels hot. Perhaps the thermo switch is operating correctly and the motor is overheating. What causes a fan motor to overheat and is there a solution? It is a 120volt, 60Hz, 2.6 Amp motor. It seems to have lost the low speed setting as well. Thank you for any advice.

We had the same problem with a Patton fan, it would run for a few minutes and then shut off, we noticed the motor was very hot, so we assumed it was just worn out.
