I've tried all sorts of over-the-counter laxatives over my lifetime, and have found only one that works well, with no aching or stress, gentle relief within 12 hours. That's Perdiem Overnight Relief, Pill Formula. It should be available at your local pharmacy or can be purchased online.

In her situation, she should take two pills with a full glass of water. Please let me know if she uses it and that it has worked. I swear by the stuff!

I have to take laxatives every day under doctor's orders due to motility problems.

I take Miralax (doctor's suggestion). It's over the counter and it's a non-addictive laxative. It works by drawing water into the colon and adding bulk to the stool. Addiction forming laxatives are the stimulant kind that actually manipulate your colon muscles.

Miralax doesn't cause me any pain, but that could be an individual thing.

There's also Benefiber and Metamucil-bulk adding fibers that are mixed into beverages.

If your wife is worried about the "addiction" stigma with laxatives, then I recommend these.
