Average acceleration = total change in velocity/total change in time.
a_{ave}=\frac{\Delta v}{\Delta t}
Instantaneous acceleration = time derivative of velocity
a=\frac{dv}{dt}
Or from Newton's second law, f=ma so a=f/m.
