I have a question regarding the wire hookups for my fan. Right now I have the connections as: black wire to black wire to black/white wire, white to white wires and green to green wires. But with these connections the fan only works from the pulls on the fan itself. No response from the wall outlets(there are two outlets in the kitchen for this fixture). There is a red wire coming from the ceiling box, but I have that isolated and is not used. Why won't my fan turn on from the wall outlets? Can I connect the b/w wire from the fan to the red wire from the ceiling?

Thanks for any info.

Tim, an expert will be along soon to answer, you say "No response from the wall outlets(there are two outlets in the kitchen for this fixture)." Do you mean the fixture has two switches?

This is a little confusing, can you explain how many cables of romex are coming into the fan box and what color and how many wires are in each? And are the outlets fed from this fan box or is the fan fed from the outlets? Thanks/

The electrical box in the ceiling has white wires(4 or 5 bundled together), black wires(4 or bundled together, a single red wire and a bare copper grounding wire. The wires from the fan are a black, white, black/white(striped) and a green grounding wire. I'm not sure what you mean about where the outlet is being fed from. There are two wall switches in the Kitchen that will turn the fixture on. I didn't mention earlier that the fan has a light fixture on it as well. I have it hooked up as black to black, b/w striped to black, white to white and green to green. I have isolated the red wire. The fan works great as long as it is turned on via the fan's pull cords, but the wall outlets don't work to turn it off or on. I would like at least for the wall outlets to turn the light on, but I don't know if this is possible. That's why I was wondering about the isolated red wire. Can this be used? There was originally a light fixture in this spot, but would like to have the fan in there. Thanks!

First, an outlet is a place where you plug an appliance in. A switch is a place where you turn a light or appliance on and off. You appear to be using the terms interchangeably. Be specific, you must use terms which other people are familiar with.

You say you have two switches. What do they or did they do? Did they both turn the light on and off? Are they right next to one another or are they on different walls, say beside doors.

Assuming the switches are in two different places and are both intended to turn the light on and off.

Connect the black from the fan/light to the bundle of black wires. Connect the black with white stripe from the fan/light to the red wire.

Connect the white from the fan/light to the bundle of white wires.

The switches will control the light.

The pull chain will control the fan.

You do not have the correct wiring to make switches control both the fan and the light.

Sorry for the confusion. Yes the switches, in different areas of the kitchen, were meant to turn on and off the original light. Thank for your help!
