We are replacing a cast iron vent pipe and toilet drains connected to it - wondering what the recommended PVC glue for the 4 inch pipe would be.

Thanks

Hi HB...

I would also recommend the OATEY brand PVC Cement and PVC PRIMER... works great for 6" pipe sizes down. You are probably best to use REGULAR PVC cement, but the heavy duty or even the all weather cement will also work as will the LOW VOC PVC cement... whichever is available at your local home improvement store. A purple PVC primer may even be required in your area, but check with the local plumbing inspector if you are having this work inspected... otherwise, clear PVC primer will be fine. DO NOT USE AN ALL PURPOSE CEMENT!

Be sure to use both CEMENT AND PRIMER here as it is an absolute requirement for the use of PVC pipe and fittings... ;) Here, by using the primer as well as the cement you are actually "welding" the PVC parts together. Without the primer you are just gluing things and expansion/contraction of the system over time will lead to leaks, OK?

There is one type of oatey PVC cement that doesn't require a primer, called RAIN& SHINE PVC cement, but do NOT use this as most inspectors will require the primer regardless if a PVC cement says it is not required, OK?

Good luck!

Mark

PS: Other brands like HERCULES, HARVEY, WELD-ON, etc. are also fine products... whatever they sell at your local home imporvement store.
