My dog went for grooming yesterday and the groomer emptied his anal glands. All night, he was very uncomfortable, not sleeping, not laying down but sitting and occasionally yelping. What can I do to ease his discomfort. Two weeks ago I tried emptying his glands and got some liquid (not much) and all night he was up and uncomfortable. I tried hot packs and then cold packs and finnally after three hours, he settled down. What should I do?

He might have an impaction. You should go to the vet and have them release his anal glands. Groomers only release them externally, sometimes that doesn't do the trick. If your pooch is real bad, and has an impaction.. not getting all of the gunk out will make him be real uncomfortable.

When doing anal glands, you should always look at the stuff to ensure there are no white specs in it. If there are white specs, then there is an infection/impaction.

If all checks out OK, then he might just be overly sensitive and should be given an rimadyl (doggie asprin) to help with the pain and discomfort.

As Lucky said they may be impacted and need further expressing as well as antibiotics.

Another option is that the groomer may just have been very heavy handed with emptying them and hurt the dog.
I would wait a day or two and see if the discomfort eases and if not head to your vet (and find a new groomer).

Sounds like they hurt like the devil. If the material gets too 'thick', it won't express easily. Squeezing too hard can rupture the glands, releasing the material into the surrounding muscles, and creating some more significant problems.

Sounds like you're at the stage of "go see the vet next" if it isn't cleared up.

Here is a web site explaining 'it', and the problem in greater detail. TMI? Hope not, and best wishes.
