Do you mean 2 black wires and 2 white wires both coming from the fam? If so. All balck to the ceiling black and all white to ceiling white. Now the red, is there a second switch, a 3 way, somewhere in the room or near by, red usually tells us 3 way.

You either have a 3 way switch or your box is wired for separate light and fan. Are there 1 or 2 wall switches? If 1, is it without the ON and OFF markings? If so, it is a 3 way switch connected to another switch in the room. If it is a 3 way, you have a loose wire somewhere if only a loose red is seen. If 2 separate single pole switches-with ON and OFF markings, cap the red wire, then black to black and white to white. What was there before and how was it wired?

Sounds like they had power to the ceiling, possibly switch looped the wall switch and ran red? To the outlet. Pull the wall switch and look at the colors. Use a VOM or test light to see what wires control the light. It could be 2 black or a black and a white that is not marked. You should also check the ceiling wires to see what is hot. If you have a hot ceiling feed and no wall switch feed, then they used a switch loop. Trace the wires and ceiling black goes to switch white. Mark white with black tape. This same white should be attached to the wall switch. The black switch wire goes to the black light and the other ceiling white goes to the light white. All other wires can be removed. By the way, what colors are the outlet box wires?
