View Full Version : Give tenant until the end of the month to pay? (Michigan)

Yes, it's me again. Believe it or not, not only do I have a question about the roofer that is trying to pull a fast one on me, but a tenant that isn't paying as well. He has been a good tenant up until now. He has unfortunately lost his job. This is more of a suggestion thing than anything. I am giving him until the end of the month to pay, rent was due the 15th. Am I just opening up a can of worms here? Or am I being "the nice guy"? He has promised to pay when he gets his "401K" in and I would rather someone be in there through the winter months, but when should I say enough is enough? Any other landlords out there going through the same thing? I could serve him his 7 day to pay, but that may just deter him to spend his 401 k on everything else besides rent just to be vindictive. Decisions, decisions... Any suggestions?

If it doesn't cause you a financial hardship to be the "nice guy" then be one. You will get your rewards in feeling better about yourself.

But I would crack down on allowing more than 2 months in arrears.

Thanks Scott,

I called the tenant today after careful consideration and explained to him why I was sending the notice. He understood and is expecting it in the mail. Hopefully he will pay within the 7 days plus two for mailing. We will see.
