Whirlpool gas dryer model LGR7646EQ. When the start button is pushed, the dryer hums for about 5 to 8 seconds and then shuts off. I can turn the drum by hand. A slight burning smell also. It appears to be an auto shut off.
It will reset after a few minutes. I am looking for repair procedure, most likely a motor gone bad. It is an older model, not really ready to replace yet.

Any ideas?

Remove the drum and see if you can turn the motor by hand (after unit has been unplugged, of course). If the motor is locked up remove it and have a shop put in new bearings which may run about $10 each for two bearings. They are normally easy to replace and you won't have to match a new motor to your drier. While you have it apart make sure to clean it out well, including the blower. You will need to take it all apart and wash out all parts to remove all of the dirt that gets up to 2 inches thick in places. Replace the belt and you will have a new drier. Make sure to check the drum bearing, as well. It could be the problem, but I doubt it. DrTom4444
