It's a mfc 240c. I have just replaced all cartridges with brand new ink. The black does not work. I only use this printer once in a while, so it has only been used 4-5 times in the last year. :(

Inkjet printers need to be used regularly to avoid the ink drying out and clogging the print head/nozzles. It may be possible to revive it with repeated cleaning cycles. Routine maintenance is covered in the appendices of the User Manual (http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/BSC/public/files/dlf/doc002072/Mini3_Mfc_Base_UsaEngUsr_B.pdf). For intermittent use, laser based printers are less hassle.

A laser printer is the best way to go. Inkjet printers dry up, get dirty and costs tons of money.
Just my 2 cents

You need to clean out the print head before you install your Canon mfc 240c ink cartridge (http://tonersupermart.ca/LC51BK-LC51C-lC51M-LC51Y-brother-DCP-FAX-MFC-130C-330C-350C-540CN-560CN-750CW-770CW-1360-1860C-1960C-2480C-230C-240C-3360C-440C-440CN-465CN-5460CN-5860CN-665CW-680CN-685cw-845CW-885cw-MFp-inkjet-printer-ink-cartridge). The ink must be dry up in the printer print head.
