Is there a law on how much a landlord can increase your rent? I pay 700 a month he just notified me that it's going up to 800$ next month

Where?
Usually, no, there is no limit or cap if a "place" is privately owned.

Hello b:
Unless you live in rent controlled housing, and/or your state landlord/tenant laws preclude it, the landlord can raise the rent to whatever he wants.. He MUST, however, give you a 30 WRITTEN notice before it takes effect, if you don't have a lease. If you do, he must wait until it expires.

First, ANY question on law needs to include your general locale as laws vary by area.
This constitutes a 15% raise which is not out of line. As long as you are not in the middle of a lease, and he has given you one month notice, this seems reasonable and legal.

Are you month to month or on a lease? The increase IS NOT against the law in NY. You have to be given a month's notice - rent increase due May 1st? You have to receive WRITTEN NOTICE BEFORE April 1st. April 2nd is too late.
