Hi,

I just started working full-time under my OPT status and was previously an F1 visa student. I am filling up forms for my current employer and I was having some trouble. For my W-4, I filed as single with ONE allowance. I believe this is the correct filing for an international student under OPT - please correct me if I'm wrong. My first question is: Am I allowed to claim exemption from withholding for 2011?
When it comes to state tax, I am confused. I am living in New York City - so I believe I should file the IT-2104 form. My question is : What is the total number of allowances I am allowed to claim for (a) New York State and (b) New York City.

Thank you so much!

If you are on the F1 visa for 5 or less calendar years, you are still a non-resident alien.
Here are the instructions for a W4 for non-resident aliens:

If you are a resident alien, one exemption is OK if you are single.
I can't say anything about NY and NYC.
