I have a 30 year old roof top unit that no longer blows cool air. Our neighbor (who happens to work for a heating and cooling company) put in a dead start / booster which worked for several months. He told us that that's the end of the line as far as repairs go and that a new unit will be between 5-6k. Since we don't plan on staying in our house for more than another year or two, I was wondering if there are any alternatives. Can the unit be rebuilt, i.e. a new compressor or other necessary parts installed to buy us some time and save us significant money?

With this being a 30 year old unit a repair should not be considered since it is not economically feasible. Most units do not last 30 years to start with so consider yourself lucky. Looks like the best deal for you is to get at least 3 estimates and replace the unit. Note: When you move or sell your home the new unit will have an increased effect on your homes value. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Thanks, I was afraid of that being the answer. I guess it is a testament to Carrier though, and the previous owner's maintenance that that thing has worked for so long.

My Carrier/Bryant unit was made in 1981 and it is still running BUT I am in the process of replacing it since it has given good service but I want to prevent a possible breakdown when the heat is on this summer. A friend of mine is going to use the old unit at his camp. The newer units will also be more energy efficient and that is another reason I am replacing it.
