I currently care for a child that I fostered for 2 years. His dad has legal custody of him now. His dad works nights, so the child lives at my home 5 days a week. I would like to obtain some kind of joint custody with his dad, without removing his dad's rights. Is this possible in the state of nj?

Can you explain how you got to foster this child? Was it through the system?

Yes, we originally fostered him through the system. His dad got custody of him, but we care for him to help dad out. We have a good report with dad, so I do not wish to remove any rights, but would like to have some legal rights to him, for convenience, and to protect us, God forbid anything should happen while in our care.

It is unlikely you would get any rights without adopting the child. But please consult a Family Law attorney who would know the local laws better.
