How do I remove the agitator on a 1977 Kenmore Series 70 washing machine?

The model number would be more helpful, but generally you remove the fabric softener dispenser, if any, then the cap on the agitator and access a bolt underneath the cap. Remove that and pull up on the agitator. If it seems to not want to come up I use my belt under the agitator and jerk it up.
