I've been in the US from 2006 and my treaty status lasted till 2010. I have received a 1042-S form from my school stating that there were 0.00 federal taxes withheld for 2010. In 2009 I had almost $2300 withheld. I'm an international student on the full scholarship. For 2010 I owe almost $2000 to IRS and I have no idea what to do. Is my school required to pay my federal taxes until tax treaty status expires? Seems like they still should have last year. I lived on campus from January till July, therefore I guess tax should have been withheld automatically for that time. From August till December 2010 I've been receiving stipend checks for room and board in amount of approx. $1400. This year treaty isn't valid any more and school takes away my taxes immediately and I get approx. $1200. Apparently I could reduce my taxable income by having some receipts like computer purchase, books etc. What are my solutions?

It appears that your treaty exemption expired halfway through the year, so you are likely liable for taxes in the second half of the year.

I would have to get a complete review of your situation, to include reviewing your visa, before I could give good, concise advice.
