I have an upstairs shower leaking.I have plugged the drain and filled the pan to check it but no leaks. When the water is draining during a shower, water leaks through the ceiling down stairs.I can see the bottom of the shower where the drain and p-trap are and it is not leaking there. Also from underneath I can see the corner of the pan where water is conning out. I'm thinking the drain is leaking in the center. Is it possible to replace the drain assembly in the pan without busting out the whole shower pan.

Your post is a little confusing. One point say ''bottom of the shower where the drain and p-trap are and it is not leaking there.'' and ''can see the corner of the pan where water is conning out''.

Why change shower drain?

If leaking from edge of pan, the problem is the 2 or 3 lines of tile from pan upward.

To locate leak, use a hose and spray water where tile and pan meet. If no leak, move spray up to next line of tile. When water starts coming in u have found the spot where problem is. Seal area with kitchen/bath chalking and should be OK.

The higher u go the more the problem will be. U may have mold behind tile and if wall is sheetrock it may have been damage to the point of needing replacing. If needs replacing use concrete board.

Any questions, let us know.

Thanks for your response. Sorry for the confusion.Per your suggestion I sprayed the tile with no leaks. At the time I had the drain plugged.I waited to un-plug the drain to give it time to leak if it was going to.Once I un-plugged the drain and the water drained out then I noticed water leaking from the corner of the pan.
