Was wondering about accent walls. How to go about picking the right color, which wall(s) to paint, pretty much a little bit of everything for a total amateur. Thank you.

Paint stores have paint chips with coordinated colors. The location of the accent wall is relative to the way room is laid out.

I am not a fan of accent walls. I don't know why. I don't like fads, and they seem to come and go.
If you have tons of windows and light, be brave with a color, but still keep it light. Colors are always 'darker on the wall' than on the chip in your hand because of the illusion.
If not a lot of windows, use a typical off white with white trim, and use art work and pillows to create accents.
