Sounds like a floor drain with a built in check valve. Prevents water from flooding the basement from the drain

Look anything like this drain? If so, there is a threaded adapter that can be removed so you can replace the ball check... ;)

Otherwise, you could take a picture of the drain over to a local plumbing supply store and chat with the guys at the counter... should be able to help you here!

Our drain looks exactly like the photo. It was put in the house in 1945 along with a shut off valve about three feet away. I doubt eith have been messed with since then. Any ideas on how to free up the fittings. I've tried and can't get the clean out plug off so I know I'll have trouble taking out the ball valve holder. BTW, That ball valve still has the rubber ring but has never stopped water from backing into the basement.

This photo could have been taken in my basement. I want to get rid of that ball so it will drain.

I would expect the clean out plug to be difficult to remove, but the ring holding the ball in place should be pretty easy to remove or cut out using a dremel tool (or similar tool).

Have you tried taking a hammer and hitting the ball down? Start there... see what happens. With luck, the ball will loosen and the drain will work without removing the ball (it is there for a reason, so try to loosen the ball first).
