Hi,
I live in NJ and 100% of my income is from my job in NY. I received 2 W2's from my employer, the one for NJ looks OK, but in the W2 that I received for NY, boxes 1 - 14 are empty. In the next boxes it does show the NY State income and tax deductions properly.
I wanted to e-file this year, but because of the above discrepancy the software is not allowing me to, stating that my deuctions cannot be greater than my income.
I did speak to my payroll department, they said the NY W2 is correct.
Is my NY W2 correct, if so how can I e-file.
TIA
Maverick

For federal return, use info from NJ W-2. For NY state return use info from NY W-2.
Since you worked in NY, this is NY income. You lived in NJ, so you will also report this income on NJ tax return. On NJ return, claim credit for taxes paid to NY.

MukatA -
Please go through my question again, I need to e-file. I cannot e-file with the boxes 1-14 being empty on my NY W-2. I need a solution for that.
Thanks,
Maverick

Your employer should have given you only one W2 - listing your NY wages and your NY tax withholding. He should not have given you a second W2 that lists NJ, since you never worked in NJ. I am assuming that your employer withheld NY taxes from your wages, but did not withhold any NJ taxes - is that correct?

When we use HRblock and use the NJ w2 for federal, its all good, and we get to the state filling it askes to enter other w2's and takes you back to the w2s area in the beginning on the federal piece to when you add it won't allow you to processed with efilling then.

I suggest trying this: tell the software that you have only one W2, not two, and for that one W2 enter the data that comes from both paper versions. In other words 2 entries for boxes 16 and 17 - one for NJ and one for NY. The total should equal the taxable wages you actually received: most likely $0 for NJ and the full amopunt for NY (assuming you worked full time in NY).

AWESOME IT ACTUALLY WENT THROUGH!!
One more thing thou please
Do I claim credit for taxes paid to NY? On NJ? Or how does this work?
Or would the system do it all its self?
Thank you!!
