I was in the process of installing a dimmer on my new home and ran into a few problems. First, the electrical box at the switch has three wires (Red, Yellow, and Black). The switch turned both the fan and light on at the same time (the black wire was capped). When installing the new fan, the fan has the following wires: Black, White, Blue, and Green. However, the ceiling has the following wires: Black, Red, White, Brown, and Green. My question is this...
1) How do I hook the fan to the ceiling where the outlet has a dimmer switch for the fan and light to work separately (I've purchased a two-switch dimmer). I just don't know which wires to hook up?

Thank you.

A couple questions, before I make any assumptions:

1. Do you have a volt meter?

2. How is the fan connected in the ceiling, so that the switch turns on both at the same time, and what wires are not used?

No volt meter and am not sure if anything was not hooked up. The previous owner cut the wires from the ceiling so short (not even flush with the ceiling), when we lifted the fan off, all the wires came unhooked right away.

It would be very helpful for you have a volt meter before we ask you to try anything, if our assumptions aren't correct you don't want anything damaged. Are any of the wires connected to each other, or is it 5 separate wires not connected to anything in the ceiling?
