It just tells me that there are no wireless networks in range... and to make sure that the wireless switch is on ?

Well is the wireless switch set to "ON". If not you cannot connect to a wireless network.
Does you router accept both wired and wireless connections. For example, Verizon does. Cox does not.
With the Cox system you have to purchase a second router that will accept wireless signals.

First we need to know if you do indeed have wireless connections around you.
Second, the switch has to be on, the drivers have to be installed, and it has to be enabled in device manager.
If the wireless card is an Intel it will most likely use an Intel third-party WiFi utility to manage the wireless connections not Windows. If it does use Windows then WZC service has to be enabled and you have to allow WIndows to manage Wireless Connections.
First we need your Operating System so we can give a step by step on things to check for.
