Not sure if it's the thermostat or something with the furnace. I want to turn up the heat in the house so I push the bottom to turn up the heat on the thermostat and the furnace does not kick on. But if I flick off and on the switch on the side of the furnace, the furnace will turn on.

Furnace - Bryant 80+
Thermostat - White Rodgers

I have a new furnace now because what you are explaining was happening too frequently. I was using the reset button as you are, but found out the igniter on the furnace was malfunctioning. Therefore the thermostat was sending the message but the furnace could not respond.

Your resetting the control board when you turn the power off than back on. The control board should have a light blinking telling you what is wrong. It could be as simple as a dirty flame sensor or dirty burners.

Hot surface ignitors are either good or bad(its like a light bulb it works or it dosen't) If it glows twice but not the 3rd time know way it could be the hot surface ignitor. It has to be control failure or safety control fault.
