HI there,

I am wondering where I can find my IP address on my computer. I downloaded an app on my phone where I can use my smart phone as a wireless mouse and I need the IP address to activate it.

YOu do know that IP changes every time you log into the internet unless you are paying extra for a static IP.

You can run a free web based application... just Google "find my IP" and take your pick.

There are other ways but that's easiest and most fool proof. Meaning you aren't into anything that you can accidentally screw up. Like inNetwork settings or from IP CONFIG

I'm sorry, but that doesn't make sense to me. I'm not very computer saavy.

Click this link Google (http://WWW.google.com).

In the box type FIND my IP and click Google search.

You will have a list of sites that pops up almost any of which can tell you what your IP is at that moment.

Or click this link..

http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&hl=en&safe=off&q=find+my+ip&aq=f&aqi=g5&aql=f&oq=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.&fp=ee7ae51cefa9981c

I didn't WANT to pick any one out specifically but this will do it directly.

Why would an external IP be needed? Wouldn't it be internal, once the phone connects to the network? Your local IP would deviat which PC wants to use the app.

ChihuahuaMomma
Mar 2, 2011, 11:15 AM
Again, I don't know what that means. There's only one computer here.

smoothy

Again, I don't know what that means. There's only one computer here.

He means if you are using a router provided by your internet provider. They many times will show one IP address (the external address others see) while they play some magic called NAS translation and give your machine another IP (the Internal Adress).

If that's the case there are ways around it via certain configurations... but (and I'm kidding here) your head might explode if we tried to explain it.

Because it is very technical, and it is very hard to understand unless you work with this stuff all the time.

...where I can use my smart phone as a wireless mouse
Hmmm... that function would use the Bluetooth wireless feature of your phone and not require an IP address at all. I would be wary of that app.

Hey is it something like this? RemoteDroid Use your Android phone as a wireless keyboard and mouse to remote control your computer (http://www.remotedroid.net/)
That's pretty cool (Android phone lover here).

For what it is worth and if it helps, I sent you a PM with the IP address that shows up here on you that we use for tracking.

It was for your comcast account

No, it's a Windows phone. The app didn't work...

You need to use you INTERNAL IP address NOT the external public IP.

Try this

Start > Run > type CMD > black box appears > Type ipconfig (in black box)> Hit enter.

Gives a whole bunch of info but what you are looking for is:

IPv4 Address... 192.168.x.x

where x idents your own machine.

Of course this won't work unless you are using wireless ;)

It still wouldn't need her external. Once the phone connects to her network it would need her internal... this is my take on it.

I'll look at the App when I get home!

I don't know the phone app, but have used the computer app version of that years ago. So I know what that does.

Yeah... that would need an IP. But because you have a router in front of your computer, you are going to need help setting up port forwarding etc on that router.

HERE IS A HOW TO FOR THIS APP (http://www.jaylee.org/rc/wp7/help-wp7.aspx)

As stated by myself and Ben, this is an internal IP Address not external. (follow Ben's advice on accessing your internal address.)

Secondly, I don't think port forwarding would be necessary either. 1) Instructions say nothing about it 2) upnp enabled device? (this is my assumption)

Curlyben
Mar 4, 2011, 06:29 AM
You only really need port forwarding for external/internal comms, not within the same subnet.

Hey better idea.
Dump it and get a decent wireless laser mouse ;)

True... Like I said... the version I used... (assuming this app wasn't just name dropping and has nothing in common with its namesake) was much older and was used similar to another app, PC Anywhere.

I don't have either an Android or Iphone.

My USB ports don't work, so mouses don't work on my computer.

Curlyben
Mar 4, 2011, 11:38 AM
So now we get to the meat of the matter.

OK so bad USB's do the standard PS/2's (old school mouse/keyboard ports) work ?

ChihuahuaMomma

My laptop doesn't have those.

Information is wonderful stuff isn't it.

Hang on as it's a laptop surely it has a touchpad?

ChihuahuaMomma
Mar 4, 2011, 11:49 AM
Yes it has a touchpad, the buttons on the pad don't work. Hence no right click, hence the reason I want a mouse...

My laptop doesn't have those. At this point the only laptops that don't have them are the newest models.

The port looks like this:

How did it happen that all your USB ports stopped working? Maybe it's just a software fix.

Unfortunately I cannot afford a new laptop at this time, nor expensive repairs...

Do you have a touchpad utility that is used to determine sensitivity, enable/disable, set presets, etc..

What make/model laptop?
Operating System?

cdad
Mar 4, 2011, 02:55 PM
I bet if you try again we might be able to fix the laptop.

Here is one thing that may have been overlooked. USB drivers may be fine. But there may be a problem in the root hub. USB's usually run through a usb root hub and if that isn't working right none of your usb's will work because it doesn't know how to talk to anything.

I would assume that I do. It's a Dell Vostro 1000. Windows XP, I think.

Do you know how to get to contol panel? Then device manager. Then look at Universal Serial Bus controlers.

See if it exists. Also here is the diagnostic program from Dell for your laptop.

Drivers & Downloads (http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&deviceid=3841&libid=13&releaseid=R188840&vercnt=4&formatcnt=0&SystemID=VOS_N_1000&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=-1&dateid=-1&typeid=-1&formatid=-1&impid=-1&checkFormat=true)

There is an option to go to "mouse"... lol

cdad
Mar 4, 2011, 04:56 PM
It may also be listed as hardware and sound. In that section you should find device manager.

If not try typing it under the windows "help" where your start button is and it will link you to it.

ChihuahuaMomma
Mar 4, 2011, 05:02 PM
Nope, there's none of that either. I found Sounds and Audio Device Properties...

cdad
Mar 4, 2011, 05:07 PM
Can you press your "start" button and see the command "run"?

Try typing control in that box and hit enter. That should give you control panel.

ChihuahuaMomma

cdad
Mar 4, 2011, 05:25 PM

If you right click it and choose properties it should tell you if it is working or not. It should be under the "general" tab. You might have to go through all of them and check to see if the system actually sees them as "working".

ChihuahuaMomma
Mar 4, 2011, 05:29 PM

ChihuahuaMomma
Mar 4, 2011, 05:31 PM

cdad
Mar 4, 2011, 05:37 PM
Do you have a mouse to plug into a port ? Or a memory stick ?

ChihuahuaMomma
Mar 4, 2011, 05:43 PM
no. I can plug in my mp4 player...

cdad
Mar 4, 2011, 05:46 PM
Ok. Before you do that lets try something real quick. Colapse the tree your on. Highlight The "universal Serial Bus Controllers".

Then your going to need to right click.

To right click with a keyboard hold down the "shift" key and then press F10.

A box should open. Highlight scan for hardware changes and press enter.

Mar 4, 2011, 05:47 PM

Not always. If the laptop has a third-party utility then it won't always be listed in device manager. I recently worked on one that wasn't listed under device manager or anything until I downloaded the touchpad utility...
