I have a friend who going through divorce and recently hired lawyer, but he wouldn't ask many questions to the lawyer. So I asked why don't you ask things that you want to know?
He said, many lawyers in the states are dodgy that they would charge you more or rip off if they figure out you don't know about much things.
That's kind of lame. Is it true? You cannot ask or discuss things with lawyers?

... is it true? you cannot ask or discuss things with lawyers?
Would you hire a tutor and then pretend to the tutor that you knew everything the tutor is paid to help you learn? I hope not.
If your friend knew everything about the subject he wouldn't need a lawyer. The ability to discuss the matter with the lawyer is one of the main things he is paying for.
He has two choices: keep his mouth shut and let the lawyer guess he is ignorant; or open his mouth and remove all doubt.

In the US there are millions of lawyers... All of them are different. Some of them respect their profession and practice it well, and some of them are jerks. The jerks usually become prosecutors, though.
