I am on the top floor of a condo that is three stories and was built in 1981. I am on the side of a canyon and the foundation of the building goes all the way to the canyon floor. The garage of the building is cement and concrete bricks. The next three floors are built out of wood. Cracking sounds or settling sounds happen during various times of the day. I have lived in the building for 23 years, but the cracking sounds are happening more often the last several months. I live in San Diego, California and this is considered our winter season and we have received a great deal of rain this year. . Is this something I should be concerned about? Your answer will be greatly appreciated.

With appreciation,
Dennis

I'd be concerned, and would ask the city inspector first, and consider hiring a structural engineer second (depending on your condo bylaws).
Talk to your fellow residents too.
The city might monitor the ground water on their steep hills and also have test equipment for the integrity of the slope.
