Hi,

I reached US on August 29th 2010. I was interested in knowing, if I am eligible for a tax waiver or get a tax refund of whatever tax, has been deducted so far.

I am single, reside at Peoria, IL.

If you work and live live in the U.S. AND you are being paid from a U.S.-source (U.S. company or U.S. subsidiary of your employer from your home country, then you ARE liable for income taxes for money earned while In the United States.

However, if you are schedule to stay for LESS than one year in total, you can deduct your daily living expenses (food, rent & utilities, local transportation, incidental costs) provided your employer is not reimbursing you for these costs with a tax-free per diem.

You will file Form 1040NR with Form 2106 to claim the daily living expenses noted above, plus the Illinois state tax return.
