Hi,
I am filing my returns for 2010. I noticed that for almost entire year I was paying more federal taxes as I had incorrect withholding allowances on my W4.( I had "0", compared to "1" for most people ). I did correct it in last month, and my tax was reduced.

But can I avail the extra taxes I paid because of incorrect allowance number in w4. Can I mention it somewhere during my return filing ?

Looking forward to any suggestions. Thanks

I use to overpay dramatically, and never saw a penny of it back. I'm sure for all intents and purposes that if you spent the time to get it back, that it will be floating in cyberspace somewhere for you to collect.. unless its been too long.. then your screwed.. like I am.

Try contacting a tax collector and ask them specifically if there is any paperwork for you to fill out if you "over-payed" your taxes, or filed incorrectly. Then simply go to your original tax agent, file out the paperwork and be done... seems easy, but I'm sure there are many more steps.
