Hi I am French J1 scholar research. I arrived in 2008 (mid-year), I was exempted for the taxes of 2008 and 2009 thanks to the article 20-21 (I don't know which one applies to me) of the tax treaty between US and France.
I am paid by a NIH grant.

Different persons told me that I am considered like a student so I am still exempted of taxes for this year. Is it true? IF yes, what I have to put in the cas "gross income", the reel income or 0.

I think that I have to complete the from 1040-NR as we are considered non-resident for 5 years? And forms 8843 and 8833?

If somebody can tell me if I am right?

Thank you for your help

J1 research scholar can not be classified as a student. For 2010, you will file resident tax return.
