I have a side by side GE refrigerator that has the Water/Crushed Ice/Ice in the door. The water worked for a while but has quit. The ice portion works fine. Can you tell me what might be wrong?

There are two possible reasons for this problem: a bad switch in the door or a bad water solenoid. In the door is a small switch operated when you want water. Remove the screws to get access and use a meter to see if the switch is closing(after unplugging it first). To test it just put the meter leads on either side of the switch and operate it. If it is good the reading in ohms will go to zero when the switch is pressed. If that is good check where the water enters the refrigerator and you should see the water solenoid. Find where the electric wires enter and disconnect one side. Check continuity across the coil with the ohm meter and if it is good it should read 1-3 kilo-ohms. One thing that could have happened is also that dirt could be clogging the screen where the water enters the water solenoid. Turn water off and check it out. This happens a lot with washing machines and I have found a few good machines by the side of the road with this the only problem. DrTom4444
