Sw1 has source, 14-3 going to sw2, 14-3 going to fan/light. 1 3-way switch in sw1 and 1 single pole switch in sw1. Sw2 has 3-way switch with only 1 14-3 coming in. light box has only 1 14-3 coming in. we bought the wrong type of lignt/fan when we had our house built - the kind that only work with remote controls. I'm replacing these with lights/fans that are controlled by switches that were put in but never worked. I need to know what gets connected to what in sw1 & sw2. I can't find any schematics online or in my wiring books that have a configuration like I have here.

Lets start with a description of the wiring between switches.

You use a 14/3 conductor between switches. A word of caution, switches only use the ungrounded conductor. So make sure you kill the circuit before do any wiring.

A three way switch has one darker screw <usually at the botton of the switch>, known as the "Common". This is for the "Ungrounded" or hot conductor.

There are two other screws for the "travelers". These are normally the Red and White conductors. .

Again normally, I would expect to find a 14/2 supply in the ceiling. The White from the source connects to the White conductor from the light fixture.

The black conductor from the supply will connect to the Black conductor that feeds the 3-way switch's "Common" screw.

The retasked White and Red are the "Travelers" they connect to the "Traveler" terminal on the other three way switch.

The black from the Common on the second switch will connect to the Black on the light fixture.
